Goal
Determine the steps needed to apply to the transfer school.
Each university will have different requirements regarding transcripts. They will typically ask for unofficial or official and may have a particular way they’d like them sent. The sooner you find out what they are looking for, the sooner you can begin the process of sending them. If you’re unsure where to look, please check out the school’s website and/or call their admissions office to confirm.
Stay up to date with when to apply. If you plan to transfer to a four-year institution in the fall, your application will probably be due sometime between February-July. If you plan to transfer in the spring, your application will probably be due sometime between August-December.
Check to see what the university requires or prefers to submit your application. Some use the Common App or the Coalition App, while others have their own process on their website.
The Common App allows you to add an advisor to your application. Consider adding your mentor to have an additional set of eyes look over your application.
There is an application fee to apply; however, if your financial circumstances may make it hard for you to pay, there will be a section in the application platforms listed above which you can request a fee waiver. If the website you use to apply does not have a section where you can indicate such, please contact the university.
Be sure to check your status frequently throughout the application process. You will typically receive an email each time an update has been made or if more information is requested of you.
The best way to feel prepared for your transition to university is to attend transfer orientation. This will typically happen in the summer if you are transferring in the fall, or winter if you are transferring in the spring. It is typically required and you can expect the day to include:
General overview of the school
Resource fair
Campus tour
How to choose classes
Appointment with your academic advisor
Be sure to check the university’s website to see what your options are.
