Learn about how internships can be beneficial to your career path.

An internship can be a valuable way to gain career experience and have an easier time transitioning into your career post-graduation. Many employers prioritize people with experience and training in a professional capacity so an internship may be an invaluable resource for finding your footing after graduation. Even just applying to an internship can give you valuable experience in navigating your field’s expectations. Learn why internships can benefit you and how to apply to one below!

Why Consider an Internship?

  1. Experience- The experience of an internship may allow you to figure out what you enjoy and be better prepared to find a job that meets your needs without making an extensive commitment. Having the experience of an internship will signal to an employer that you have the training and transferable skills, even if you move to a different field.

  2. Connections- Internships can be a great way to network with people who are in different spaces of their careers. From your peers to the company management and leadership, being able to build relationships and work together can be invaluable. Your manager could be a great reference for you when you look for a new job or an incredible resource as a mentor if you work towards connecting and showing your best self through your internship. Many internships can even turn into full-time opportunities!

  3. Professionalism- An internship can give you a better understanding of the expectations of working in your chosen field. Internships can help students to learn how to navigate workplace culture, leadership, and norms which can make participating in workplace culture easier.

Apply To An Internship

The internship application process can differ from company to company but a great way to find support in looking for an internship is to start looking as early as possible. Check the different resources available to you. If you’re at a university or college, consider starting with your school’s career resources and faculty as they may have opportunities specific to students and/or resources to help you excel at the applicant stage.

Check postings local to you or internships relevant to your field of choice. Don’t scare away at internships that may be far away as they may have relocation and housing stipends. Focus on finding an internship that would be in a field that you want to pursue.
